The Use of Spring plates in Management of Acetabular Posterior Wall Fractures

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the clinical results and complications of acetabular posterior wall
fractures managed with spring plate technique.
Materials and methods: We reviewed 10 cases of acetabular fracture involving the posterior wall managed with
spring plate technique between March 2002 and November 2004. The radiologic results were evaluated by Matta’s
method. Articular displacement was also evaluated in postoperative CT scan made after the operation. The clinical
results were evaluated by Matta’s criteria.
Results: According to the above criteria, anatomical reduction was obtained in 6 cases, satisfactory reduction in 3
and unsatisfactory reduction in 1. All cases were united without any loss of reduction. For the clinical results, 4 cases
were classified as excellent, 4 as good and 2 as fair. As for complications, femoral head irritation due to the spike of
spring plate was observed in one case.
Conclusion: Fixation of the posterior wall fragment using spring plate was considered to be a useful method for
posterior wall fracture with comminution involving articular margin.
